As part of the European Interreg France–Wallonie–Vlaanderen RE-ASSIGN project, the Centre Terre & Pierre is actively pursuing the development of solutions designed to support companies in integrating recycled plastics into their activities.

To improve the reliability and reproducibility of its analyses, the Centre recently acquired a RETSCH CryoMill, a high-performance cryogenic grinding technology particularly well suited to complex polymer materials.

What are the practical benefits of this new equipment?

Post-consumer recycled plastics often have a heterogeneous composition that may affect the accuracy of chemical and environmental analyses.

Thanks to the CryoMill, samples can now be:

  • homogenised much more finely;
  • prepared at low temperatures to prevent thermal degradation;
  • made more representative before the various analytical stages.

This optimised sample preparation significantly improves the quality and reliability of analyses, particularly for:

  • measuring the chlorine content of post-consumer plastics and alternative fuels;
  • identifying flame retardants in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE);
  • carrying out quality control on recycled materials.

With this new equipment, the RE-ASSIGN project is strengthening its analytical expertise and its ability to support companies in:

  • developing new recycling value chains;
  • conducting advanced material characterisation;
  • improving resource circularity;
  • securing secondary material streams.

This new equipment is an additional asset for companies in the France–Wallonie–Vlaanderen region, providing them with access to more robust and reproducible analyses that are fully suited to the challenges of the circular economy.
